Washington D.C., July 1, 2026- Elevance Health, formerly Anthem Inc., updated their medical policy, to allow for blood-based biomarker testing for the detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, making Elevance Health one of the first major payors to outline coverage criteria.
GAP President John Dwyer said, “GAP applauds the decision by Elevance Health to explicitly endorse the use of blood-based biomarkers as a tool to assist in the diagnosis or guide the clinical management of Alzheimer disease. As the first major payor to establish a coverage policy for blood-based biomarkers as an appropriate element of the diagnostic process for Alzheimer’s disease, this marks an important milestone for expanding access for patients and enhancing the quality of care they receive. By improving access to an earlier and more reliable diagnostic program, Elevance Health is empowering patients and their physicians to use the best tools to make informed decisions about treatment, care planning, and participation in clinical research. It also represents meaningful progress for the field by accelerating the adoption of diagnostics that will improve the quality of care for people at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.”
