Why are new tests needed?
Alzheimer’s research would benefit from less expensive and more accessible tests for brain amyloid.
Brain amyloid plaques are a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) which are sticky “clumps” of protein that build up around brain nerve cells and disrupt healthy brain activity.
Currently, the best way to determine if you have amyloid in your brain is with a brain amyloid Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan that uses FDA approved radiotracers. A PET scan is expensive, not covered by insurance, and is limited to the facilities and cities that can receive active radiotracers.
Blood and digital biomarker tests in the Bio-Hermes study are comparatively simple, less costly, and accessible for neighborhood and sophisticated health systems alike.
Who can participate?
This study is seeking 1,000 volunteers of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds who are:
- 60 to 85 years old
- With or without memory loss
- Have someone who can participate with you as a study partner
What does the study involve?
This study requires two (2) visits with the research study staff and one (1) visit to a local imaging site over approximately three (3) months. A follow-up phone call will occur depending on your brain amyloid PET scan results. No experimental treatments are part of this study.
What are the benefits of participating in this study?
You will not be responsible for any costs associated with the brain amyloid PET scan or other study procedures.
Your study clinician will receive the results of your brain amyloid PET scan and discuss the results with you. Results may be helpful for understanding your risk of AD, your ability to participate in other research studies, or your suitability for future medications that clear amyloid from the brain.
You may help represent individuals of similar background, race, and ethnicity through participation.
The Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation® (GAP) is committed to keeping the study open until at least 20% of the volunteers are African American, Black, Hispanic and/or Latino. Read more about our diversity initiative here.
